Erez Bar Noy began playing the saxophone at the age of 22, after listening to a John Coltrane marathon radio broadcast with Danny Karpel. Passion, even if ignited late, generates a brilliant flame. Almost thirty years have passed, and today Bar Noy is at the center of the Israeli jazz scene, an acclaimed musician, composer and teacher. Six years ago, he founded his sextet, playing original music with innovative and challenging pieces, mixing together – jazz, swing, groove, Israeli music, funk, the sea, trails, beaches and the city.

He began studying at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, but New York attracted him more where he continued his studies at the Mannes College of Music and The New School. For many years, he lived and worked in the Big Apple, performing with artists such as Randy Barker, Eddie Gómez, Abraham Burton, and Sam Yahel, among others, before eventually returning home to a local career with occasional performance tours abroad. In Israel, he has collaborated with a great many musicians including Shay Zalman, Avishai Cohen, Amos Hoffman, Danny Gottfried, Arale Kaminsky, Amikam Kimelman and others. Bar Noy is a teacher and educator, director of the Center of Jazz Studies at the Israel Conservatory of Music in Tel Aviv and director of the graduate joint program with the New School. He also leads the Red Sea Jazz Festival Young Jazz program every summer in Eilat, and in fact, Bar Noy has earned a place of honor for shaping a growing younger generation of quality jazz musicians in Israel.

The Bar Noy Sextet is an exclusive place to express his unique talent through original and refreshing compositions and his refined manner and virtuoso technique as a bandleader. Music critic Yossi Hersonski described this sextet as “a splendid band featuring fresh and sweeping swing in a modern orientation.” Haaretz music critic, Ben Shalev, noted that Bar Noy has “especially rounded saxophone playing.” Their repertoire is extremely versatile with alternating energies, rhythms and vibes, and includes new creations alongside selected selections from the past. Despite the distinct Israeli character, their link to American jazz, mainly of the East Coast, cannot be ignored. This is everything that original Israeli jazz can and should be.
