Marking the 80th birthday celebration of the giant trumpeter Enrico Rava, the Red Sea Jazz Festival welcomes him in Eilat for the second time accompanied by a supergroup of young jazz stars from Italy.
Enrico Rava entered the international jazz scene in the mid-sixties, and to this date, even years into his extensive career and after leading dozens of varied and rich musical projects, he is lauded as a dedicated and insightful musical architect, one of the pioneering solo artists of the European jazz and most admired Italian jazz player in the world.
Rava’s artistic and human integrity defies any categorization while characterizing him as an outstanding storyteller who fascinates the audience with the warm caressing sound of the trumpet. Ben Shalev (Haaretz) described his previous performance in Eilat, “Fifteen minutes into the show it was clear that this is indeed a fantastic performance, one of the best jazz performances that we have seen here lately.”
Accompanying Enrico Rava this summer in Eilat is a team of leading Italian jazz stars specially joined together for his 80th birthday celebration, including:
Giovanni Guidi (34), acclaimed pianist and bandleader who has accompanied Rava for more than a decade, winner of the TOPJAZZ award by Musica Jazz magazine and named the best talent of 2007. Francesco Diodati (36), a rising guitarist who is much influenced by rock and electronic music, voted as best guitar player by the JazzIT annual readers’ poll for five consecutive years. Francesco Bearzatti (52), one of the top tenor saxophone players in jazz and known for his free and progressive style. Gabriele Evangelista (31), a highly sought after young Italian double bass player who has collaborated with many leading Italian and international musicians of the period, such as Roberto Gatto, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alessandro Lanzoni and Danilo Rea. Enrico Morello (31), an attentive and sensitive drummer esteemed for his strong academic background, extensive international experience on stage, and mastery of various styles.
