Catherine Russell, a jazz and blues singer, was born and lives on stage. She grew up in New York City, daughter of two musicians. Her father, Luis Russell, was a pianist, composer, a Big Band leader, and Louis Armstrong’s musical director in the 1930’s-40’s. Her mother, Caroline Ray, was a jazz musician, guitarist, bassist and vocalist, and a member of the first international women’s band, International Sweethearts of Rhythm, which was active in the 1940’s. With this background, it was inevitable that Catherine would become a singer. She had contributed to more than 200 albums and travelled around the world with artists such as David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Donald Fagen, Carrie Smith, Michael Feinstein, and Rosanne Cash.
In 2006, at the age of fifty, with brilliant achievements for over more than three decades, she decided to allocate some time to her solo career. To date she has released six albums and won critical acclaim, awards, and a new audience of fans in America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Well-versed with the most profound roots of jazz and blues, she received a place of honor in the international jazz scene, performing in every major festival and on every prominent stage. The Wall Street Journal describes her as “the best blues and jazz singer going today,” and the All Music website’s guide states that, “Russell emerged as a retro old school vocalist for the ages.” She won a Grammy award for her performance of Crazy Blues, a song from the 1920’s, on the soundtrack of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, and her sixth and most recent album won the 2017 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Russell is a singer with a rich and colorful voice, and the ability to juggle with it effortlessly. With a clever and poignant stage personality, her repertoire is a sequence of carefully selected gems from the 1920’s to the present, and complemented with lively soulful and humorous interpretations. An honorary member of the American Super League of female vocalists, Russell introduces a brilliant and glittering acoustic swing. This is a classic case of someone who was born into the music aristocracy, and grew up to achieve grandeur in her own right.
