When the gospel choir sings the popular Hebrew song, “Tamid Yehaku Lecha” (i.e.: will always wait for you) together with singer Leah Shabat, who wrote both music and lyrics, in a warm, harmonious and precise performance, it seems that this song has just arrived from a church in the southern United States. Jazzing it up with Ofer Portugaly jazzes up 13 familiar and loved Israeli songs with a fine chic suit of blues and gospel. “That’s the true essence of jazz,” says Portugaly. “Just like in the 1930s, ’40s and’ 50s, when jazz musicians took popular hits and songs and gave them a personal interpretation, I love to render and add my own interpretation and the fact that through this project I was given the opportunity to connect with artists whom I love and appreciate.”

Portugaly, a pianist and arranger, a senior faculty member at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, has been creating a link between jazz and local culture for almost three decades with original Israeli jazz compositions as well as adaptations to heritage assets of Israeli music. Ofer and his wife, drummer and vocalist, Iris Portugaly, have released six albums together and established a Zionist gospel choir after returning from a successful and inspiring tour in Nigeria. Their performance in Eilat is the festive launch of their seventh album with special appearances by artists who participated in the Jazzing It Up project including Leah Shabat, Doron Talmon of the Jane Bordeaux band, and Sagiv Cohen. This show will also include special arrangements to familiar jazz standards and more surprises.

These courageous musical compositions further demonstrate how singers, even if they are rock, pop or world music singers, find inspiration in and welcome the influence of jazz. With youthful excitement and maturity, experience and finesse, Portugaly successfully brings together the different worlds, and appreciates this opportunity, “It is a dream come true and a great privilege to work with artists of this caliber and such beloved songs, and create together quality Israeli jazz.”
